Special Report:   Straits Forum

A four day cross-Strait cultural and creative industry exhibition began in Taipei on April 23. The exhibition, with the theme of "heritage, innovation, cooperation and development," consisted of two exhibition areas, "Chinese traditional craftsmanship" and "modern creative design." These two areas collected over 90 classical works in fields such as palace art, folk handicrafts, industrial design, tourist goods, cartoons and printmaking.

Reporters learned that 20 arts and crafts masters from Beijing revealed and explained their works to Taiwan people, introducing palace arts and crafts such as jade sculptures, lacquer carvings, filigree inlays and imperial embroidery in the "Chinese traditional craftsmanship" area. They also demonstrated the process of making traditional folk handicrafts, such as kites, clay sculptures, dough figurines, facial makeup and silk flowers, so the audience could feel the charm of the Chinese traditional arts and crafts for themselves.

In the "modern creative design" area of the exhibition, exhibitors applied modern scientific methods including acousto-optics and multimedia, and also made use of two and three dimensions and the integration of virtual reality, in order to make the audience take part in and experience the pleasure brought on by this kind of creativity.

Chu Xiangyin, vice chairman of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Beijing Sub-council, said to reporters that the cultures on both sides of the Straits have the same roots, and much of the art is interlinked. This exhibition is aimed at promoting the exchange and prosperity of cultural and creative industries on both sides of the Straits, and enhancing the core competitiveness of the Chinese cultural products.
