Special Report:   2010 Shanghai Expo Countdown

On April 24, the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination and the Music Copyright Society of China (MCSC) signed the memorandum of music copyright cooperation for the World Expo 2010 Shanghai.

The memorandum settles the issue of legality for the organizers and participants to perform and use the music of others during the Shanghai Expo. It helps form the pattern of IP protection that involves the joint efforts of the organizers, participants and third parties.

According to sources, the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination's collaboration with the MCSC, which will grant the organizers and participants the package licensing to use third party music during the Shanghai Expo, is a general solution to all IP-related problems.

Reporters learned that the licensing mainly covers six aspects- the property, the scope of use, the time limit, the region, the royalties involved and the settlement of copyright disputes. It is specially mentioned that copyright disputes caused by the organizers and participants of the Shanghai Expo using the third party music within the licensed scope and after the royalties are paid, are to be settled by the MCSC.

In addition, the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination and the MCSC will also cooperate in other areas, including the MCSC providing legal advice and information enquiry services for music copyright.
