Profile:

A Romanian sporting icon and superstar, Adrian Mutu has been waiting eight years to prove himself for his country at the top level. A prolific scorer in qualifying competitions (17 goals in his last 20 matches), the 29-year-old striker has also been in outstanding form over the past two years for his Italian club ACF Fiorentina.

Sprang to prominence in 1999 when he scored 18 goals in 18 league games for FC Dinamo 1948 Bucureşti, prompting a transfer to FC Internazionale Milano and his first Romanian cap.

Limited opportunities at Inter but had a positive input at UEFA EURO 2000™, especially as a stand-in for the suspended Gheorghe Hagi against England.

Spend two seasons at Hellas Verona FC. The second ended in relegation but he moved to Parma FC where he proved a big hit alongside Brazilian striker Adriano, scoring 18 Serie A goals (second best tally in the league behind Inter's Christian Vieri).

Moved to Chelsea FC but his career in England was cut short by suspension; returned to Italy where he joined Juventus.

Revitalised at Fiorentina under his ex-Parma coach Cesare Prandelli; 16 goals in 2006/07, 17 this past season when he also helped the Viola to the UEFA Cup semi-finals.

Scored his first competitive international goal in the 5-2 home defeat by Denmark in a UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifier; since then Romania have not lost a competitive fixture in which he has scored.
