Appointed as Switzerland's UEFA EURO 2008™ captain in succession to Johann Vogel in the spring of 2007, Alexander Frei was unable to lead the team during the autumn due to a thigh injury. A consistently prolific scorer for his country, his sharpness in front of goal could make or break the tournament for the co-hosts.

A native of Basel, Switzerland's group stage base at UEFA EURO 2008™.

Began career with FC Basel 1893 but moved clubs repeatedly before settling in Geneva at Servette FC, scoring 30 league goals in two seasons plus six in UEFA Cup.

First capped for Switzerland while at FC Luzern – scored hat-trick in 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifier v Luxembourg on first start.

Five goals in UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying but none at finals in Portugal, where suspended for final game.

Seven qualifying goals in 2006 World Cup plus two at finals (against Togo and Korea Republic).

Moved to France in 2003 to play for Stade Rennais FC; Ligue 1 top scorer (20 goals) in 2004/05.

Joined BV Borussia Dortmund in 2006, scoring 16 goals in debut Bundesliga campaign.
