Profile:

A big hit at the 2002 FIFA World Cup as a precocious 18-year-old, Dmitri Sychev had his troubles after that tournament but has reinvented himself at FC Lokomotiv Moskva and still ranks as arguably the most talented Russian forward of his generation. Lithe, elusive and skilful, he is also a consistent goalscorer for club and country.

Received football education in St Petersburg at Smena academy before launching career with lower-league outfit FC Spartak Tambov.

Signed by FC Spartak Moskva for 2002 season; scored six goals in first six games earning him senior debut and trip 2002 World Cup, where he came on in all three matches and scored v Belgium.

Contract dispute with Spartak after World Cup led to four-month ban and move to Olympique de Marseille; made little impact during 18-month stay in France.

Returned to Russia in early 2004, joining Lokomotiv; scored 15 goals and was voted Russian Footballer of the Year; just two substitute appearances, however, at UEFA EURO 2004™.

Sealed Russia's qualification for UEFA EURO 2008™ with winning goal in final qualifier v Andorra; scored 15th goal for country in May 2008 friendly v Kazkhstan; has never gone more than five internationals without scoring.
