Special Report:   IPR Protection

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge told journalists on 9 April when he attended the XVI Association of National Olympic Committees General Assembly in Beijing that the IOC appreciated BOCOG's efforts in the protection of Olympic intellectual property rights (IPR). He said, the BOCOG has attached great importance to the protection of Olympic IPR and is doing well in this field.

Rogge said at the media interview, some people and companies in other countries does not respect Olympic IPR and have been involved in ambush marketing, and the IOC has taken measures to stop the practice because the ambush marketing infringes upon Olympic IPR. He compared ambush marketing to robbing, a practice that robs what belong to someone else.

He also pointed out that the BOCOG has been confronted with the phenomina of counterfeit mascots or other products and thus taken necessary measures to stop the infringement and offence. He hoped that the Olympic Games would be "a catalyst" for the protection of IPR.
