Issues of the day

The NPC closing ceremony is a time for the nearly 3,000 deputies to vote on various items. The legislators will vote on a draft resolution on the government work report Premier Wen Jiabao delivered at the opening of the ten-day session; they will vote on a resolution on the past year's and this year's government budgets, as well as on the economic and social development plans; They will also vote on the resolution on the work report of the NPC standing committee, and on another two resolutions on the work reports of the Supreme People's Court and the Supreme People's Procuratorate.

But most important is the draft anti-secession law, that's been very much in the media spotlight in recent days. In addition, the NPC deputies will also decide on new members of the state central military commission following the election of President Hu Jintao yesterday as chairman of the Commission, succeeding Jiang Zemin.

Premier's press conference has been part of the end of the annual NPC session for more than ten years. And it's an opportunity for the media to pose questions on a whole range of issues. The questions will no doubt focus on the hot issues under discussion at this year's session, such as China's economic growth prospects for this year and beyond, the stock market, agriculture and farmers. And of course, there's China's building of a socialist harmonious society. But more importantly, the Premier will field lots of questions on the anti-secession law, which is expected to be adopted by the NPC this morning. The Premier will also probably need to restate China's foreign policies on a number of issues.
