Special Report:   2010 Shanghai Expo Countdown

Construction started yesterday on a pavilion for Shanghai Expo 2010 that will display the spirit of the city's vast business community.

The Shanghai Corporate Pavilion, whose nickname is “Magic Cube” will be erected on a 4,000-square-meter plot and be an environmentally friendly building featuring intelligent technology, dreamy artistic conception and interactive experience.

The construction is expected to take about ten months.

The pavilion's organizers also unveiled its logo, a white magnolia with blue and green petals symbolizing the harmony between nature and man. The blue signifies industry, technology and accuracy while the green means environmental protection and harmony. Both colors highlight the strong vitality and tolerant of local corporations.

The pavilion will offer a "dream-like" experience to all visitors, in which "butterflies" will fly around and guide all who enter, said the pavilion's chief designer, Edwin Schlossberg, principal of the United States-based firm ESI Design.

The transformation of the butterfly is one of the most miraculous and beautiful natural processes and is a metaphor for the transformation of local corporations from small to giant, Schlossberg said.

Shen Hongguang, standing member of the CPC Shanghai Committee and also organization department head of the Communist Party of China Shanghai Committee attended the ceremony.
