Words about fruits (1)
E: Hi, welcome to "Let's talk". Well, I think you can see from what's in front of us, what are our topic of conversation is today we have some idioms to share with you about "fruit". And I know some of these fruits you definitely know their names because I think every even kindergartner in China knows apples and oranges.

R: "Apples and oranges". There's an expression for apples and oranges. And a good example would be when I was young, my brother loved to play basketball and I loved to dance ballet, and my mother got so tired of us. Arguing "Dancing ballet is harder." "No, playing basketball is more difficult." It was a stupid argument. My mother would say "That's like comparing apples and oranges. You can't compare them. They don't to compare. They're completely different fruit." So that's your first idioms about fruit. But you know apples and oranges, some of these fruits you may not know them in English.

E: Now we have here two things, Maybe you'd call them both oranges, and you could call them "oranges" . But we call this "an orange". It's kind of hard to take the peel away. It's difficult to peel an orange. But this is "a tangerine", and when you take the peel from a tangerine, it comes away very easily.

R: The tangerine has a couple of other names too. In England, they called it a "mandarin" and in France they called it "clementine". So you might hear those words used in English as well. They mean the same thing. These were easy good snack fruit. Also this orange has a nickname.

E: Oh, Yes. You see it has a 肚脐. 肚脐 in English is "navel". Your navel. And so this is called "a navel" or "a bellybutton". It's actually called "a bellybutton" or "a navel". "Navel" is more scientific.

R: I've never ate so much watermelon before in my life as I have living in China. Everyone in China loves watermelon, and you should know that that's a melon group. There are other melons in English cantaloupe, honeydew. I don't have more to show you but they are called melons.

E: And I know in Chinese you say " 冬瓜,西瓜, 大傻瓜". If you call someone "a watermelon head". In English, "He's a watermelon head." It's the same as calling someone a"大傻瓜".

R: And something surprised me too. When we buy grapes we call grapes just "green grapes" or "red grapes" and there are also "purple grapes", darker ones. I couldn't buy them this morning. But they have two names in Chinese, they're not the same.

E: Yeah. But we called these all "grapes". They are all "grapes", 提子and 葡萄. They are all "grapes", but one is red, or green, or purple.

R: You know my son asked me if the fruits are seedless, because now you can buy seedless grapes which are good to eat easy no seeds. He said if the fruit are seedless, how can they make more fruit? No seeds.

E: They do it by cutting the branches off, then sticking them on a new...

R: And making more. That is a good question. Where is the egg without the chicken? The fruit without the seeds.

E: Here is the fine fruit. This is called the plum, and in Chinese you think of "plum" as "梅" or "梅子". But this is a very big one. In the US we don't have the small ones like you have in China we only have this kind of plum. And it's really considered a very good fruit, actually it's a very very good for you, very healthy. And we use this in an idiom too.

R: Yeah. You could say you've gotten a new job that everyone want it. It was terrific and you're thrilled, and so I might say to you "You just got a plum job."

E: Yeah. Or "a plum of a job". That means you've got the best.

R: That's similar actually to "It's the berries." "It's the berries." Having something that's the berries or even "He is the berries." That means it's really good or really sweet.

E: Right. And "berry" is a word we use for a lot of different fruits. We have "strawberry" "raspberry" "blueberry" "blackberry".

R: That's right. We couldn't find them all the way, we have some cans. And can berries you can cook with. Here's cherries, and blackberries, and blueberries. Here are strawberries.

E: You know this is such a normal fruit. Everyone knows banana. But if somebody said to you "Oh, she's going bananas." Would you know what that meant? "She's going bananas." it means she's going crazy or wild for something. Maybe they like it a lot. So for example, if you really like to eat strawberries you could say "She really went bananas for those strawberries."

R: All these idioms are a little fruity and that means a little crazy, but they are fun. So I hope you can use them. Have fun with them.

E: We'll teach you more next time.

  但我们称这个为orange(橙子)

  to peel an orange(剥橙子皮)

  而这个叫tangerine(橘子)

  tangerine(橘子)也有不同的叫法

  这种orange(橙子)也有别名

  或叫 bellybutton(肚脐)

  有多种melon 比如 cantaloupe(香瓜)

  He is a watermelon head.

  叫做plum(李子 梅子)

You just got a plum job.

或者说 a plum of a job

  It's the berries(浆果).

  berry(浆果)也包含很多种类

  比如 strawberry(草莓)

  raspberry(山莓)

  blueberry(蓝莓) blackberry(黑莓)

  这是 cherry(樱桃)

  这是blackberry(黑莓)

  这是blueberry(蓝莓)

  而这是strawberry(草莓)

  人人都知道banana(香蕉)

  She is going bananas.

  She is going bananas.

She went bananas for those strawberries.

  这些用法都有点fruity( 疯狂的 怪诞的)
