The difference between British English and American English (continued)

E: Hi, Welcome back to 'Let's Talk.' We are doing British and American English again this week.
And we know that you are interested in this and you've asked us about this. And it's complicated. We found that out last week, didn't we?
R: Remember there were 6000 words which were different. We are starting today with some very useful one. So go get your brothers and your Mom and Dad. Okay? These are good.
E: Today's topics will be given with a very important one. And that's the difference between American English and British English in terms of the bathroom 厕所. In the US people will say bathroom, or they might say lady's room and men's room. Or they might say rest room. That's all 厕所.
R: Right, rest room is in public usually, in your home it might be a bathroom.
E: Right. But in Britain? And again, I'm going to represent the US and Rebecca will represent England today.
R: Right. and in England , There isn't always a bath where the 厕所is, where the toilet is. The actual toilet appliance might be in a different room not together. So in England they will call the whole room where you go and do those private thing the toilet, in the America just the appliance where you do your thing is the toilet. So I know when my little son was playing with his British friends and they got all muddy, his mother said to him "Oh son, you must go and wash your hands in the toilet." He was shocked and appoud and he thought she meant go and wash his hands in, you know, where?
E: In the 马桶.
R: She didn't mean that, she meant go to the room she calls it toilet and wash his hands in the sink. So that is a big British American difference and it has certainly confused him.
E: So you have to remember then if someone says go wash your hands in the toilet, you don't wash them in 马桶. You wash them in the sink with water comes out.
R: And if you guys are out there. Today we have some manly vocabulary, we want to start with automobiles and cars.
E: Yes, so we have one. Just to make sure you know what we are talking about. On this car you can see the front of the car, this part opens up, and usually the motor is here. This part in American English is called the hood. Lift up the hood to check the engine.
R: In England you would say, Open the bonnet, lift the bonnet of the car.
E: And bonnet is also a hat. So it's a kind of like a hat for the motor.
E: And then there is the back of the car where you put the luggage. And in the US this will be called the trunk.
R: But in England it is called the boot. There is also word boot, which is the boot you put your foot in and wear like a tall shoe. That is also the boot.
E: 靴子. It is different, isn't?
R: Now you are going to fuel your car and go. In England you fuel it with petrol .
E: Yeah, petrol is gas in the US or gasoline. But I think every American would know that the petrol was gasoline. And every British person would know that gasoline was petrol. They are very common.
R: Yes , they are both short gas or gasoline, petrol for petroleum. But you know a trunk and a lorry are very different. In England we say lorry.
E: In US, we say truck. 卡车
R: And our cars and trucks both drive , in England, on the motor way.
E: Yeah, but not in the US, they drive on the high way.
R: Now also, you don't want to go too high speed or you'll be stopped. In England by a bobby.
E: A policeman in the US, but both countries use cop, a copper.
R: Right , that is true, copper. And in England, you're bobby or copper might be driving a panda car .
E: Panda, that is right, like 熊猫, because it has black and white . But in the US , it would be a police car.
R: So these are good car words for when you're next travelling in England or in the US. What other guy words did we have? I think the very very very important one is football. In England and most of the world football is the game you play kicking your feet, Right? Only in the America it called something else.
E: Yeah, in the America, it is called soccer. I think many of you know these already. Soccer in US is football. But of course there is American football which you call 橄榄球, a football shape like this. It is related to the British game of rugby.
R: And that is not just kicking obviously it's throwing , they are very different sports. But they are two different football. That is tricky.
E: Yeah it's real tricky.
R: How would you, what would you watch if you were watching the game. In England you might be watching the Tele.
E: But in the US , it would be the TV or the television. And if you went out to a movie afterwards a 电影, you wouldn't say that in Britain.
R: Right, you would going to see a film. So we do have some differences and there are fun to learn.

R: 英美词汇中大约有6000个词汇存在差异，我们就从一些常用的词汇开始，叫你的弟弟、爸爸和妈妈一起来看吧，这些都很有用。
E: 今天的话题比较实用，英美语言在有关厕所的词汇上就存在一些差异，美国人把厕所叫"bathroom"或者叫"lady's room"和" man's room"在美国 它还可以叫做"rest room"。
R: "rest room"通常是指公共厕所，家庭的厕所叫做"bathroom"。
E: 那么在英国是怎么样的呢？今天， 还是由我来代表美式英，Rebecca代表英式英语。
