A top Hamas leader says Israel's military campaign in Gaza has ended chances of a negotiated peace. He's calling on Arabs to pressure Israel to end its offensive. The comments by Damascus-based Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal come as members of Hamas join Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Cairo to discuss an Egyptian cease-fire proposal. They'll also take about a possible international monitoring force to enforce an agreement.

Hamas leader called on the Arabs to pressure Israel to end its offensive

Khaled Mashaal, a Hamas leader, said: "We are asking for - first: an immediate cease-fire, because this is neither an equal battle nor a cross-fire battle. Second: the immediate withdrawal of enemy forces from Gaza. Third: lifting the siege of Gaza, this siege has for a year been behind the explosion in the region. Fourth: opening all the crossings and firstly the Rafah crossing."

Meanwhile, four rockets struck the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon on Saturday, lightly wounding four people. In a possible sign of progress for the Israeli military, no rockets had been fired into Israel overnight. This is a sharp drop from the dozens of projectiles that were launched in the early days of the offensive in Gaza.
