A new TV drama version of the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" is to start shooting. The news was announced by director Gao Xixi at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing in April. The Three Kingdoms became a hot topic this year with two screen adaptations. One is the current "Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon". The cast is headlined by superstar Andy Lau. The other is from internationally renowned director John Woo. "The Battle of Red Cliff", which stars Tony Leung, Takeshi Kaneshiro and Lin Chi-ling is to hit cinemas this July. Gao Xixi shows confidence in his new production.

Gao Xixi, said, "I have no reason to fail. It's such a great script and there have been so many successful versions. But on the other hand, this gives me more pressure."
The new adaptation will be a panoramic sweep of stories from Three Kingdoms. It will also face a challenge from audiences who've been deeply impressed by previous adaptations.
Gao Xixi said, "Based on the original work, the TV drama also tries to blend the aesthetics and an understanding of modern-day audiences."
Only Chen Jianbian has been cast for the role of Cao Cao, a military strategist and statesman during the Three Kingdoms. The search continues for actors to take the other roles.
