China's banking regulator is urging lenders to extend timely loans to support the supply of agricultural products. The China Banking Regulatory Commission said on its web site that rural lenders should expand the scope, size and terms of micro loans to help farmers.

The watchdog said with liquidity tightening in the banking system, it's increasingly complicated and difficult to offer financial support for spring ploughing. It also said those who abuse the loans should be held responsible, without clarifying.

Serious snow storms in southern regions and continued drought in the north have greatly disrupted agricultural production and farmers incomes. The freak weather also pushed inflation to an 11-year high of 7.1 percent in January.
