The latest figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics show pork prices increased over 58 percent in January. The wholesale pork price reached its peak on February 7th at 22.75 yuan per kilogram, but it has fallen over 1 percent up to now.

Data from the Ministry of Agriculture indicated that the number of pigs which are ready to be slaughtered will increase gradually in the next couple of months. The Ministry of Commerce said the price spike was temporary and prices will gradually fall.

Geng Hongzhou, Official of Ministry of Commerce said "Due to the winter storm and the consumption spree during the Spring Festival, pork prices have surged and reached its peak on February 7th, the first day of the lunar new year. But now the price is steadily falling back."
