Special Report:   2008 Spring Festival

China's retail sales, the country's key gauge of consumer spending, surged 16 percent during the week-long Spring Festival holiday despite the worst winter storms in half a century. That's according to the Ministry of Commerce, which said consumers spent more than 250 billion yuan, up from 220 billion yuan during the same period last year.

The ministry attributed the surge to the country's efforts to increase market supply and stabilize prices. The government released part of its meat reserves to the market and redistributed 400-thousand tons of vegetables.

It also initiated measures allowing vehicles carrying fresh farm products to be exempt from road tolls and freeing wholesale suppliers of such products from "as many charges as possible."
