40th anniversary of the founding of Tibet

Celebrations are underway in Tibet for the 40th anniversary of the founding of the autonomous region.

A conference for senior government officials has been held in the Tibetan People's Hall in Lhasa to celebrate the anniversary.

Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Jia Qinglin, is head of a delegation of the central authorities, that attended the meeting.

Jia Qinglin, Chairman of CPPCC National Committee, said, "The Tibetan people led by the central government has made enormous achievements in the past forty years. Facing new situations, Tibetan people should make more efforts for a socialist new Tibet that is united, democratic, well-off, civiliazed and harmonious."

Meanwhile, Jia Qinglin also attended a garden party and visited Jakhang Temple in Lhasa.

More than 100 religious leaders welcomed the delegation.

The religious leaders honored the delegation with symbolic white scarves. On behalf of the central government, Jia Qinglin donated a Buddhist Canon to the temple.
