Hello everyone, this is Zoe. Welcome to Goal, Unit 5, part 1.
First of all let's review the recap of the pervious episode.
在上一集中，Manni参加了替补队之间的比赛并射门得分，由于和对方球员冲突而被红牌罚下。
此时Lucia又要求Manni和她一起回家。
The commentator said that Against the odds, Manni scores.
尽管怎样，马尼还是射门得分了。我们先学学odd，odd一词是奇数，
1、3、5、7 are odd numbers。
Odd also means not regular，occasional。an odd job。一份临时的工作 。
Life would be very dull without the odd adventure now and then。
如果没有时不时的冒险，生活会很枯燥。
Odds是名词，表示机会、可能性
Odds means the probability that sth will or will not happen。
It is odds that he will come。他大约会来。
另外一个可以和Odds 连用的短语是“at odds”，意思是“不和，争吵，意见不一致
At odds is in disagreement with，
Cui，Are you at odds with your boss？你与老板不和吗？of course not。
On many issues, John and Mary found themselves seriously at odds.
John和Mary发现，他们在很多问题上有严重的分岐。
It seems that Manni will go back home with Lucia，
Now they are packing the suitcase，preparing to go。
Lucia 和Manni在房间里收拾行李，还有一个小时出租车就会把他们送往机场。
看来Manni真的要回家了。
Right, Lucia asked Manni to put the cases for the porter.
Ok, sure. 看来Manni已决心回家了。就在这时，Joe来到他的房间，强烈要求Manni留下。
Joe tried to make Manni stay. Joe said：Manni, what's up?
You're not seriously thinking about leaving, are you?
"what's up?"，意思是出什么事了吗？怎么了？Manni？你还没认真想是否真的要离开，对吗？
When Joe hears that Manni will fly this morning，he is shocked。
He said：No, you're joking. You can't just go!
you're joking意思是“你在开玩笑吧？” joke做名词是“笑话”，
比如“tell a joke"是指“讲笑话”； 作为动词时是指“说笑话，开玩笑”，
I'm not joking with you我不是跟你开玩笑
You said you lost your wallet in the subway, are you joking ?
你说你的钱包丢在地铁里了，你在开玩笑吧？
Sure. 另外一个和joke相似的词是"kid", 作名词时一般指“小孩”，
作动词指“取笑，开玩笑”， 用法和joke相近，比如：
She is not really angry, she is only kidding. 她不是真的生气，她不过开玩笑。
No kidding, it's truth. 不开玩笑，这是真的。
Ok, it seems Manni has made up his mind to leave Rangers.
He's not joking. He has already decided。
马尼已经决定了， made up one's mind。下定决心。
He made up his mind to leave. 他下决心要离开。
Joe said：Manni， you can`t just give up。Give up means stop doing sth，
abandon an attempt，persuit。
Give up 就是放弃做某事。For example：
I wish I could give up smoking。我希望我能戒烟。
I gave up trying to playing violin when I listened to one of my record。
我听了一盘自己的唱片后就不再想拉小提琴了。
I am certainly not prepare to give up all my weekends to cleaning the house。
我当然不想用整个儿周末的时间来打扫房间
当Joe问他为何执意要走时，Manni说出了自己的内心感受。
In Manny's eyes, he didn't belong in the club and didn't feel part of the team.
He felt terrible about what happened the night before 。
Manni说这个俱乐部里没有他的位置，感觉不到他是球队的一员。
一想到昨天发生的事情，Manni的感觉糟透了。
这里belong 是应被放在（某处），合适，属于的意思。
And he said he had enough of it., he can't take it any more.
Manni已受够了，再也无法忍受了。
Next, Joe asked Manni to leave the hotel with him.
He wanted to talk to him face to face, even half an hour is enough.
Joe坚持要和Manni谈一谈，有半个小时就够了。
Joe said：Just half an hour of your time. That's not much to ask, is it?
我只占用你半小时的时间，这个要求总不算过分吧？That's not much to ask。
Joe insisted that Manni should not make such a big decision
without thinking things through properly.
在Joe看来，Manni不应该未经深思熟虑就做出重大决定。
"think...through" 是指“彻底全面地考虑”。比如：
We have thought this matter through. 这件事我们已彻底考虑过了。
与"thing through"相类似的短语还有"think over", 是指“仔细考虑”或“重新考虑”。
比如下面的例句：
Please think it over and let me know. 请把这件事件仔细考虑一下再告诉我。
Fortunately, Manni accepted Joe's suggestion.
But he reminds Joe that he had got a plane to catch.
Manni提醒Joe他们只有半小时的时间，他还要赶飞机。
I`ve got a plane to catch意思是我要去赶飞机。
在Joe 的坚持下，Manni同意和他一起离开酒店。
不知道Joe要做什么，他有什么好办法能让Manni留下吗？
I think Joe must have got a good idea, he seemed quite confident of himself.
Joe作为Manni的好友，尽力劝他留下，真是非常感人。
Right, I'm also touched by what Joe has said to Manni。
Before Manni leave the Hotel，he said to Emma: Hi Emma,
Could you tell Lucia I won't be long.
Manni在离开酒店前请Emma 转告Lucia，他很快就会回来，
I won't be long我不会耽搁很久的。这是常见的口语表达方式，相当于“I will be back soon."
Emma notices that Manni is wearing his suit，that is not for training。
Joe asks Emma urgently：has Lucia already ordered the cab to take her to the airport?
cab是指taxi出租车， Joe问 Emma ，Lucia是否从酒店预订了去机场的出租车？
ordered the cab to take her to the airport.
Order 就是订购，预定 order a cab 叫出租车 order tickets 订票
在酒店吃饭，服务员会问你Would you like to order now? 您现在可以点菜吗？
Emma tells Joe that Lucia has already order a cab，
Joe asks ：what time is it booked for?
Joe问Emma：预订的出租车是什么时间的， what time is it booked for?
Book一词我们讲过，和order的用法相同，都表示预约、预订。例如：
You will have to book up early if you want to see that show。
你要想看演出，必须早点定票。
Joe also ask Emma to phone Sophie，and tells Alex that Manni
really want to leave London Rangers。
Manni真的要离开伦敦流浪者队了。Sophie知道后马上告诉了Alex，
然后与他一起匆匆离开了球场。
Alex and Sophie left the pitch in a hurry, Paul said let's hope
it's not bad news about Manni
Joe 带着Manni来到孩子们的训练场，一边看着孩子们踢球一边谈Manni少年的时梦想，
他尽力激发Manni的斗志。
A group of kids are playing football here.
Joe tries to remind Manni of his childhood dreams.
He said do you remember being that age?
Who did you want to be? What dreams do you have?
但是Manni认为离开英国回家也没什么，他并不是第一个在英超呆不下去的外国球员。
He said he was not the first foreign football player
who couldn't make things work in England. Joe said:
But you can make it here. You have to fight for success.
couldn't make things work in England不能在英国取得成功，
can make it here你能在这儿能取得成功。
"make it" 是指达到预定目标、办到、做成、成功的意思。
When your friend is not so confident of something, you can just say,
"take it easy, you can make it."别紧张，你能行。
Tell him I want to see him tonight, at my house if he can make it.
告诉他今晚我要见他，行的话就在我家。
Joe also told Manni he should fight for success.
Real fighters never give up and walk away.
你应该为成功而努力，真正的斗士绝不会放弃也不会逃走。
fight for 是指为了..而奋斗、斗争；比如fight for success 为成功而努力
This task is very difficult, but you must fight for it.
这项任务很困难，但是你必须努力完成。
fight 还有另外一种用法：fight with sb over sth与某人为了...而斗争，请看例句：
This company needs a new vice-president,
Tom is fighting with Smith over this position.
这家公司需要一个新的副总裁，Tom正在和Smith争夺这个位置。
Manni can understand what Joe said to him，
but he is really frustrated at this moment，he said：
but they DO know when they`ve had enough。
They Do know when they are beaten。
DO放在动词前面，用来起强调作用。他们的确知道什么时候他们就受够了，
他们也的确知道什么时候就被打败了。比如：
Do remember to bring your book for me。
千万别忘了把你的书带给我。
Do be careful to drive the car。开车一定要小心。
He did accomplish the task in time。他确实按时完成了任务。
When Sophie tells Alex that Manni will going back home，
Alex is very worry about it ，will they find Manni？
Alex just can`t understand Manni，he had one bad game，
one stupid moment，one red card and he goes and gives up。
Alex 说 Manni只经历了一场失败的比赛，一个愚蠢的时刻，
和一张红牌就要走掉，就要放弃，他实在不理解。
Sophie thinks that it has got a lot to do with Lucia。
“have something to do with” and “have got a lot to do with” 与...有很大的关系
Alex said, "Manni has got a great future ahead of him, I don't want to lose him".
ahead of 在....前面、在前头 ahead of time/schedule表示“提前“。我们来看例句：
Danger ahead! 前面危险！
A new life lay ahead of him. 新的生活展现在他面前。
set the clock ahead 把闹钟拨快
When Joe introduced Manni to his boys，Manni asked：
do you want to have a kick-around? Do you want to have a kick-around?
kick-around是指抢球游戏，几名球员围成一圈互相传球，
圈子的中间有一名或二名球员负责抢球，抢下谁传出的球谁就进入圈内继续抢，
而抢到球的球员就加入传球的一方了。
Kick around also means to travel somewhere in a casual way without a plan。
He spent a whole month just kicking around the countryside，
enjoying the peacefulness and the fresh air。
他在乡村到处走了一个月，享受那里的宁静和清新的空气。
Right, we have a lot of football words with kick。Such as：
Kick-around 抢圈 Kick-in 任意球、射门练习
Kick-off 开球、中线开球 Kick-out 出界
The first goal came just 2 minute after the kick-off。
开球以后2分钟就进了第一个球。
Manni seemed quite happy to be with the kids.
Joe shouted to Manni：come on Manni, They're killing you out there.
kill out 的本意是“杀绝、杀光”
Lions killed out all the deer in the forest.
狮子把森林里的鹿都吃光了。
Right, when you plan to move to a new house, there're so many furniture,
You'd say: oh god, they'll kill me out.
但片中是指“要了你的命”，意思是这些小球员都很棒，很难对付。
Joe想借此激发Manni的斗志。
Joe said: They're the future. They expect a lot from you.
Every one of those kids looks up to you 'cause you're a great footballer.
这些孩子中每个人都钦佩你，因为你是了不起的球星。
Look up的本意指“向上看、仰视”，所以look up to sb look up to有“钦佩、敬重”的意思。
我们来看例句：
This artist is much looked up to for his landscape paintings.
这个画家以风景画受人推崇。
Just like you looked up to Ronaldo.就像你仰视罗纳尔多一样。
Look up to向上看，指“钦佩、敬重”“look down on”， 向下看，轻视、瞧不起
Look up to 钦佩、敬重 Look down on 轻视、瞧不起
They look up to him for his knowledge.
他们因为他的而知识渊博而钦佩他。
They look down on him for his deceit.
他们因为他不诚实而瞧不起他。
Then Joe tells Manni don't let them down. 不要让他们失望。
Let down: 使失望、沮丧Let down的用法我们在前面的片中已讲过，
you looked down。你看上去有点沮丧。Don`t let me down。别让我失望。
现在我们来学习由let组成的常用短语。
let be 不打扰、使维持现状 I'm okay, let me be. 我很好，别管我。
let off 宽恕、放过 I'll let you off this time, but never again.这次我放过你，下不为例。
let out 放走、发出 Who let out the air out of my tyre? 谁放了我轮胎的气？
Against the odds 尽管有极大的困难
At odds 争吵、不和
You are joking! No kidding! 你在开玩笑吧/别开玩笑了
Have enough of it/ can't take it any more 受够了/无法再忍受了
Thing through 彻底全面地考虑
Order a taxi/ticket/hotel room 有关预订的表述方法
Make it 做到、成功
Fight for success 为成功而努力奋斗
Ahead of 领先
Look up to 敬重、钦佩
Let down 让.....失望
make it, fight for, ahead of kill out, look up to,以及let down的用法：
Alex has found Manni at last，but Lucia is also there asking Manni to go back home，
in the next part，you may wonder：Will Manni stay with London Rangers
or go back home with Lucia？Will Manni join the team and fight for victory？
Would London Rangers win the games next or lose?
Could Manni take the chances to goal for the team?
What will happen to Paul in the coming training？

上集节目中， Manni面临着重大抉择。在Joe的劝说下他们来到一个训练场，
Joe劝Manni不要轻易放弃。

"To be or not to be, that's the problem."
Let`s go on with the story。
Alex try his best to persuade Manni，he said：
I can't believe you really want to walk away and turn on your back
on a great opportunity like this, Manni.
我不相信你真的想走掉，失去这样好的机会。turn back 转过身，背对着，
也就是停止向前、往回走。我们来看例句：
He turned back from the crossroads and went home.
他从十字路口折了回来，回家去了。
Turn back the clock。把时钟拨慢。
Turn back还有 “反悔”的意思
Remember, once you sign the contract, there's no turning back.
记住，一旦你签了合同，就不能反悔。
To be or not to be，Manni is really facing a problem，
if he made up his mind or made a choice，he can not turn back！
Alex continues to say ：This is all about your life，your future as a footballer。
It is not about anyone else。
作为一名足球运动员，这一切都关乎你的生活，你的未来，
It is not about anyone else。这不关别人的事。
About 一词我们很熟与..有关。
This is all about your life，your future。关乎你的生活，你的未来
So what Manni decided to do is all about his life and his future。
Alex wants him to do what is the best for HIM，not what is the best for anyone else。
每当我们要做一个人生重大决定的是时候，总要想想这个决定对谁最好，最有利what is the best for ，we will decide to do what is the best for sb。Alex wants Manni to do what is the best for himself，not what is the best for anyone else。Alex 希望马尼做最有利于他自己的事，而不是别的什么人。
But Lucia thought Manni could do better back at home.
London Rangers is just a little club. She looks down on LR。
但Manni接受了Alex的建议, 他改主意了。看来Manni只能对Lucia说抱歉了。
He changed his mind。He said, "I know, but I've got to do what's the best for me.
I'm sorry".
我们来看看Lucia会有什么反应：
You're an idiot, Manni, I don't' ever want to see you again!
Not ever means "never". For this sentence we can say:
I'd never want to see you again.
你这个白痴！我再也不想见到你了。Ever用在否定句中时，可以表达never的意思。
I haven't ever been to the Great Wall.
I've never been to the Great Wall.
这两句话意思都是说“我从未去过长城”。
We're happy that Manni decided to stay. It's such a difficult choice.
Now let's see the first part again.
做出这个决定真是不容易。
伦敦流浪者队刚刚输了两场比赛，面对两天后即将来临的重要比赛，
Alex教练进行了激动人心的训练动员：
At this moment, Rangers really needed encouragement and inspiration.
Alex said：We lost our last two games,
and there's nothing that we can do about it now.
We've got to put it behind us and learn from our mistakes.
We've got to put it behind us，Alex教练让大家忘掉已过去的两场比赛，
把它在一边，并从过去的失误中总结教训。
"put behind" 两个词连在一起用的本意是“延误、拖延”。
put和behind分开用，意思是“放在一边，不理会”。
For it kept raining for days, their traveling plan was put behind.
由于连续几天下雨，他们的旅行计划只好延后了。
Now that the game is over, just put it behind.
既然比赛已经结束，那就别再想着它了。
接下来Alex教练又说：What I want is 100 percent concentration and 100 percent commitment.
It sounds really touching and inspiring.
Victory does need one hundred percent concentration
and one hundred percent commitment.
Alex教练说：我所需要的是百分之百的专注和百分之百的承诺。
concentrate 是动词，集中注意力，concentration是它的名词形式指专心、专注。
You must concentrate on your work。你必须集中精力工作。
He is a boy with little concentration。他是个注意力不集中的男孩。
现在我们重点讲讲commitment的用法：commitment多用于书面语中，
表示“承诺、保证”，也指“义务”。比如：
make a commitment 做出承诺
carry out one's commitment 履行承诺
The president said in his inauguration he would carry out his campaign commitment.
总统在就职演说中说，他将履行他的况选诺言。
Every player of the team should undertake his commitment for more victory.
为取得更多的胜利，球队中的每个球员都应当尽自己的义务。
为了鼓舞士气，Alex教练在训练动员结束前，故意让球员们大声表态以表明他们的决心。
这也是教练们常用的方法。接下来他说："thank you, five-a-sides".
"Five-a-sides!"是每边五人一组分队训练。
五人一组，进行分组对抗练习，一组模拟进攻，另一组负责防守。
反复练习教练安排的战术。
It sounds really touching and inspiring.
So all the players must try best in the training cause,
so that they can be starters in the following game.
正式比赛前的训练，球员都会积极表现，争取在接下来的比赛中能首发出场，
to be the starters。Paul在五人一组的训练赛中十分卖力，结果一不心扭伤了脚踝。
Paul tries best to show his ability, but he twisted his ankle.
It`s a pity of Paul that he twisted his ankle。
Twist is to hurt by pulling and turning sharply。
Paul扭伤了脚twisted his ankle。Twist有捻、搓、盘绕的意思。
比如： To twist a wet towel。拧干毛巾
Twist the threads together把纱线拧在一起
The snake twisted around the branch 蛇缠绕在树枝上。
Twist 引申讲还有歪曲、扭曲的意思
He twisted my words。他曲解了我的意思。
Now Alex turns to Manni, he says： get yourself onto the pitch -
I want to try you in Pual's position. Off you go!
Manni有了出场机会，Alex想让他试试Paul的位置，也就是前锋的位置。
try him in Pual's position。Try sb。试试某人。Off you go!去吧。
我们学过，off we go！我们走啦。这样说非常口语话。
Alex asked Paul to keep still，don`t move and wait for treatment.
Keep still。保持静止不动， still 不动的、静止的，
a still lake 平静的湖面all sounds are still万籁俱寂
But does Paul keep still ？No，he thinks it is just a twisted ankle，
it will be fine。And Manni is doing well，Alex encourages him：
keep pushing up！Push up is to force sth rise。
Push up 持续上升。Alex教练鼓励Manni，keep pushing up！
继续努力。Paul不以为然地说：
“Looks a bit lost to me. I'd have scored five by now."
Actually, Paul wanted to say: "Manni looked a bit lost to me.
I would have scored five if I were on the pitch."
Pual瞧不起Manni的球技，他说这句话的意思是，如果他在场上，
他已经打进五个球了。这里lost是指“输掉、不如”。
In the changing room, Manni was worrying about Paul's injury.
Joe nudges Manni，he says that will be enough to keep him out for a couple of games。
这足以让Paul有好几场比赛都参加不了。Enough 我们前面也讲过是足够的意思
be enough to足以 keep him out 让Paul在比赛外边，也就是使Paul不能参加比赛。
Manni was wondering if he had the chance to show himself if Paul couldn't play.
He asked Joe do you really think Alex will pick me for the team？
Pick me for the team。 Pick有在许多人里挑一个出来的意思，Alex能否挑上马尼，
关键还是看Paul的受伤情况，所以Alex来到治疗室里看望Paul的伤情：
Paul doesn`t want to lose the chance of getting on the pitch。
He says：It`s just twisted。I`ll put an ice-pack on it，and it will be fine。
Pual坚持说他的伤没关系，用冰袋敷一下即可。
Ice pack指冰袋，队员扭伤时一般先用冰袋敷上，可以镇痛，是临时措施，比赛结束后再治疗。
Ice pack 冰袋Remember to use ice pack when you twisted your foot, it's helpful.
Don`t use a hot towel，it will make the hurt getting worse.
球队接连输球，训练中主力前锋又受伤，面对接下来的比赛，Alex教练会做出什么样的安排？
是继续抓紧训练还是让队员充分放松？
Tomorrow would be the New Year. Alex says ：
Mrs Carter and I would like to invited all of you over
to our house for a New Year party.
Who is Mrs Carter？
Mrs Carter当然是Alex Carter教练的夫人了，they have the same family name，
她的名字叫Davina Carter，是个黑发美人。尽管大赛就在眼前，
Alex教练仍然在新年前夕邀请球员到家里举办新年晚会，
目的是让球员彻底放松、增强凝聚力。但是他也对晚会提出了要求：
He says I don't want anything too wild or crazy, okay?
But if you DO come to my party, then I'll give you all the day off tomorrow.
There wont' be any training.
wild and crazy是指混乱、荒唐、无法无天。Alex教练希望他们不要玩得太过分。
但他在比赛前还是给队员们放一天假。Give you the day off 意思是放一天假。
Off means free from work。这里off指“休息、不工作”
off 休息、不工作 give the day off 放一天假
ask for a day off 请一天假 take the day off 休一天假
接下来Alex表明开新年晚会的目的，我们来看片中对话：
I think it's important that we all keep team spirit as high as possible.
It'll do us all some good. And at least I'll know exactly where you all are tonight.
He says：it`s important that we all keep team spirit as high as possible。
team spirit，我们一般称为“团队精神”。
Team spirit, sometimes people also say "teamwork".
Yeah, in sports game, such football, basketball or any other sports,
team spirit is the most important factor to win victory.
Nowadays, many big companies are practicing team spirit.
Team spirit Teamwork的本意是配合、协同工作。
团队精神是指团结、协作、服从大局，并积极为团队做出贡献或牺牲。
几乎所有涉及团队的工作中都有人提到团队精神。
Yes，it is a very fashionable word in modern life。
For example, we must stick to team spirit to finish this TV program.
Alex教练还幽默地说：at least I'll know exactly where you all are tonight.
意思是，至少，我会知道今天晚上，你们的去向了。
In the end, Alex says: "I wan us all to have a good laugh tonight
-some rest and relaxation".
"have a good laugh" means have a good time, enjoy one's time.
Have a good laugh 过得愉快 Laugh口语中的意思是“消遣、玩乐”。
For example：What do you do for laughs here? 你们在这里作何消遣？
Alex invited the players to his house for the New Year party.
Who came to the party? What did they do that night?
Were Manni and Emma happy during the party? What did Alex say in the party?
Were there any new year wishes for London Rangers?
Did they get ready for the next game?
