US Continues Air Assaults on Taliban Frontlines
THU, NOV 08, 2001
US B-52 bombers pounded frontline positions of the Taliban in Khanaqa facing the opposition Northern Alliance north of Kabul on Wednesday, sending up huge columns of smoke and hiting Al Qaeda posts, witnesses and commanders said.

On the 32nd day of US air assaults, a Reuters photographer reported seeing at least five waves of B-52 warplanes repeatedly bombing frontline positions in the Rabat area. Northern Alliance fighters applauded from their observation posts, and local commander Asif Khan said the bombing was very accurate.

In Washington, General Peter Pace said the US has put teams on the ground to support opposition forces, who claim to be closing in on the key northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif.

General Peter Pace,US Marine Corps, said:"Very fluid situation, as you would imagine. We know that the opposition is making gains. We do have, as you know, some of our special forces folks on the ground with them."

Pace added that more US teams would be put in if necessary. He wouldn't be specific, but says the US forces have been successful in reducing the Taliban's strength, both in men and equipment.

However, Abu Dhabi television on Wednesday showed Mujahadeen returning from the battlefield, singing and dancing. The ruling Taliban says US bombs have failed to dent their fighting ability but have killed more civilians. The cause to damage to buildings in the capital Kabul could not be independently verified as being recently caused by US bombs or by previous civil war and Russian conflict.
