The Northern Alliance forces in Afghanistan claim to have overrun Taliban defences and captured the strategic northern town of Mazar-i-Sharif. The Pentagon says its unable to confirm these reports but describes the news as "encouraging."
US jets pounded Taliban positions on the front-line north of Kabul in some of the heaviest raids ever. Opposition soldiers were preparing to advance towards the capital.
The Northern Alliance forces say they have seized control of the airport outside Mazar-i-Sharif and entered the town, which is near the Uzbekistan border. Pentagon officials said they are cautiously optimistic about the reports. Rear Admiral, John Stufflebeem said the loss of Mazar-i-Sharif would be a psychological blow to the Taliban but the Pentagon would wait until the dust settles in the city before determining the impact of the bombing campaign. Meanwhile, supporters of the Taliban regime continue to head across the border from Pakistan to join the "holy war".
