U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft issued a new terrorism alert on Monday based on information the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) received about possible attacks within the next several days, officials said.
Ashcroft said possible new attacks could occur this week in the U.S. and against U.S. interests abroad, urging Americans and law enforcement to be on the highest alert.
This information is "credible," Ashcroft said at a press conference in Washington, but unfortunately, the authorities did not have specific information on which targets will be attacked.
"The warning should be taken seriously," he said.
The alert is the second of its kind this month. The FBI warned on October 11 that additional terrorism attacks could occur within days.
President George W. Bush also said earlier Monday that "the country must stay on alert" as "our enemies still hate us."
