As rescue workers continue to sort through the debris of the World Trade Center in New York, security was stepped up at all ports of entry to the United States.
California National Guard troops were deployed to Los Angeles and San Francisco airports Friday to strengthen security and restore public confidence in flying.
Gray Davis, California Governor, said:"I have activated the California National Guard at the request of President Bush. Their job is to provide an additional level of security at California's airports and to restore confidence to the flying public."
Travelers at California's airports will begin seeing soldiers dressed in battle fatigues, usually armed with M-16 assault rifles.
The troops' duties may be expanded to security at baggage claim and at the perimeter of the airport.
Passengers are being required to show identification and tickets three times during the boarding process - at the check-in counter, security checkpoint and at the gate.
US President George W. Bush has ordered up to five thousand troops to be stationed at the nation's 420 commercial airports.
The deployment will last up to six months while the federal government develops a permanent security plan.
