US and British launch military action in Afghanistan
MON, OCT 08, 2001
A U.S.-led coalition, including Britain, launched fresh attacks on Kabul early Monday after its first wave of air strikes late Sunday night. Explosions and anti-aircraft fire were heard from the airport area in Northern Kabul.

The Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press said people were reported fleeing from the city. Targets in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad are also among those being bombarded in the broad-based attacks. The first explosions could be heard about 8:57 pm local time in Kabul after nightfall on Sunday.

U.S. President George W Bush said forces are taking carefully "targeted actions" against Taliban military operations and the al-Qaida network of alleged terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden. Many targets, including the airport in Kandahar, the headquarters of the Taliban militia and the Taliban command center in Kabul were destroyed.

A variety of military aircraft are being used, including long range B2, B1 and B52 bombers.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair said on Sunday that British submarines had also launched cruise missiles at Afghanistan.

Local officials in Islamabad say that Pakistan airspace was used in the U.S.-led military strikes against Afghanistan. A U.S. military commander at the Pentagon said after the attacks began that although today's military actions are visible, less visible actions are going on simultaneoulsy.
