WTO Member Economies Congratulate Shi Guangsheng in Doha

Sunday was a big and busy day for Shi Guangsheng, head of the Chinese delegation to the WTO Doha meeting. In addition to signing WTO documents, he met trade ministers from a number of member economies, who offered their congratulations to China.

The first meeting was with Singaporean trade minister George Yeo. Shi Guangsheng thanked Singapore and other member economies for their support for China's accession. George Yeo offered his congratulations to China. He said that he couldn't get into the meeting hall for China's accession Saturday night as the room was overcrowded with people wanting to witness the historic moment.

George Yeo,Singaporean Minister of Trade and Industry,said: "China's entry is a landmark.The best is to join the world trading system and to open up their economies."

Martha Lucia Ramirez,Colombian Minister of Commerce,said: "We believe that China will add a perspective to the developing countries, which is going to be for all of us and other developing countries."

While delivering her congratulations, the Malaysian trade minister discussed with Shi Guangsheng the prospect of a new round of trade talks, saying that she was not optimistic.

Aziz Rafidah, Malaysian Minister of Int'l Trade & Industry,said: "Yesterday as you know we had meetings with all the ministers. All the statements they made reflect they can have.Most people are not in agreement so you can not on agreement. You can not have a new round with disagreement."

Negotiations for a new round of trade talks continued for a second day on Sunday. The outlook remained unclear.
