China Becomes Closer to WTO

The 18th Session of the Working Party on China's Accession to World Trade Organization (WTO) has concluded its work at 1 a.m. (0200 GMT) Saturday which marks the end of all negotiations on China's accession to the trade body.

All the agreements reached at the informal working party will be submitted for approval to the formal working party meeting next Monday.

Chief negotiator and head of China's delegation Long Yongtu said China's entry into the WTO will help the outside world to better understand China and will accelerate reform and the building of a market economic system in China.

He said that after the WTO entry, China will cooperate with its trade partners in a competitive way.

WTO Director General Mike Moore said, "I fully expect the working party on Monday to make its formal recommendation to ministers, setting the stage for their approval at our ministerial

conference in Doha this November."

"We are very close to bringing China into the multilateral trading system." U.S. negotiator Jeffrey Bader made a statement after the meeting, saying: "The decisions bringing China to the WTO will commit China to adhering to the rules-based global trading system.Opening market in China can contribute greatly to the furtherance of reform in China."
