    The goal of the event "The 4th International Contest of Amateurs Peking and Kunqu Opera on TV" is to promote Chinese culture, to revitalize the art of Chinese operas and to strengthen the friendship among overseas Chinese. This event provides all friends of the Peking and Kunqu Opera the opportunity to demonstrate their particular skills.

    This event is organized by China Central Television. The Organization Committee, the highest authority of the contest, welcomes all friends of the Peking and the Kunqu Opera to participate in the contest. The contest procedure will be held as described below.

    The contest is parted in two categories A and B :

    Category A (not including Kunqu Opera)

    It is required that the participants shall perform Peking Opera arias (in Xipi or Erhuang).

    The wearing of costumes and make-up is not required. The duration of the performance is limited to 6 minutes.

    Category B

    It is required that the participant shall perform one aria either of the Peking or Kunqu Opera. The wearing of costumes and make-up is required. The performance is limited to 8 minutes.

    The contest is conducted in four sages: application/registration, primary selection, final contest and award ceremony.

    1. Application/Registration

    A. Participants apply for the contest (free of charge) to the Organization Committee.

    B. all applicants should be amatcurs with no regard to age, nationality and occupation.

    D. Application period: from March 11,2002 until May 15, 2002

    E. Materials Required When Applying:

    1) The application form can be obtained from "China TB Guide" No. x, from the website http://www.cctb.com or directly from the Organization Committee. The form should be filled completely. Photocopies of the application form are accepted and approved.

    2) A photocopy of the personal ID card, student ID card or passport is required. Minor participants should also submit valid certification of their identity.

    3) Twp copies of a 2-inch passport photo.

    4) Category A participants should submit an audio cassette or a half-inch VHS video cassette containing a recording made after 2001.

    Category B participants should submit a half-inch VHS video cassette containing a recording made after 2001.Date indicator could be the recording date, name of play and type of role or character.

    2. Pre-Selection

    The pre-selection period will be from May 20,2002.Basis for the pre-selections are the audio and video materials submitted by the participants. Altogether 50 candidates will be selected from both categories. All the audio and video materials will be kept.

    3. Final Contest

    The performance in Category A should not exceed the duration of 6minutes and in Category B 8 minutes. Any extensions will result in a deduction of the candidate's total score. Any required musical accompaniment, supporting roles, costume, make-up and props will be provided by the Organization Committee. If the candidate wants to bring his/her own supporting roles and any of the above properties, all the ensuing costs should be borne by the candidate.

    Participants under 15 in age can bring one adult person as his/her custodian. Participants and their companions are responsible for their own travel expenses. Their board and lodging in Beijing will be provided by the Organization Committee.

    Entrants under a false name will be disqualified and have to compensate for the inflicted losses.

    The final contest will be held during the first and middle ten-day periods of August 2002. The contest will be taped and broadcasted by China Central Television. Selected contestants who have live singing and performances will be awarded with Gold and Silver Dragon Awards.

    4. The Award Ceremony

    The Award Ceremony will be held and broadcasted live on CCTV in August 24, 2002.
