In order to showcase its different regions, the Chinese Pavilion has set aside a 600-square-meter indoor space in the exhibition area for each of its provinces.
Shanxi has announced the theme of their exhibition will be "A Dynamic Era." for the Expo. Shanxi's Pavilion will focus on "looking at Shanxi's five thousand years of civilized history as well as its contribution of innumerable amounts of coal to the motherland" and will also address the two core themes of human civilization and energy resources to chronologically demonstrate the benefits Shanxi has brought to China as a whole.

Shanxi's Pavilion will be divided into three exhibition areas, including those for culture, energy resources and the future; the areas will be titled: "road of the city", "light of the city" and "dream of the city," respectively, in order to display Shanxi's history and culture, the power from the province’s energy resources and the development of a harmonious future in accordance with its urban life.
Visitors are only allowed to walk in one direction. The pavilion's main entrance looks like a traditional wooden Dougong from Shanxi and the outside walls are made of steel that was produced by the Taiyuan Iron and Steel Company and they are also engraved with a special design, which displays the historical and cultural aspects of architecture in Shanxi.
Shanxi is participating in five main activities during the Expo: the first is the Chinese Pavilion itself, the second is the Expo Shanghai Online, the third are the activity weeks and daily activities which will be held by the provinces, districts and cities for the Expo, the fourth activity deals with the activities in the central forum and the last activity Shanxi will participate in is the Chinese food garden.
According to sources, the physical exhibition area, as well as the virtual exhibition and other spaces in the Shanxi Exhibition will appear on the Internet for the benefit of visitors. Shanxi will hold a five-day "Shanxi week" between May 19 and 23. Currently, the theme for the week is "an enthusiastic Shanxi inspires the world."
