As she talks about the major transformations and growth of her business during the last ten years, Chong becomes filled with emotion.
"The major expenses for us in Hong Kong included rent, basic materials and workers' salaries. These were tough problems for a business operation and the solution for us was to invest in the mainland. If we hadn't done that, we wouldn't have been able to achieve the success you see today. On the mainland, everything has worked in our favor and our fast growth was like making popcorn, " said Chong Kinwo, creator of the Wanchai Ferry Brand.
When Lady Chong formed a joint venture with the US company General Mills Incorporated in 1997, the powerful marketing network of General Mills quickly pushed Wanchai Ferry frozen food into the Chinese market. Today, there are major Wanchai Ferry manufacturing facilities in Shanghai and Guangzhou and the brand covers 70% of the market in China. Needless to say, the most dramatic changes for Wanchai Ferry dumpling began in that very special historical year: 1997.
When Victoria Park was built, people began to buy flowers at the park's Lunar New Year Flower-market just before the Chinese New Year.
Thirty years ago, Chong's two young daughters would pick up flowers people had left on the ground after the Lunar New Year Flower-market closed for their family's holiday celebration. Ten years ago, the family had just moved into a new residence when they tuned into a TV drama called "The Dumpling Queen", which was based on Chong's own story.
In 2007, Chong celebrated the Chinese New Year with her daughters' families in her newly-decorated home.
During the last ten years, Chong's two daughters have both married and she is now a proud grandmother.
"I have a granddaughter, the third generation of our family. A friend of mine emailed me, saying the third generation of the "dumpling queen" had been born. I felt overjoyed. Of all the congratulations I received, this one is the best. I have a new successor for my business, "said Chong Kinwo, creator of the Wanchai Ferry Brand.
In this family of three generations, the toddler certainly brings tremendous amount of joy to her grandmother.
Through the windows, the family watches Chinese New Year fireworks light up the sky, and Lady Chong feels great strong emotions at this time.
"Many years ago, achieving the kind of success. later accomplished would have seemed beyond my wildest dreams.
It's now become a reality. When I travel back to the mainland, my friends often tell me that they've tasted my dumplings in Beijing, Shanghai, or other places. It makes me feel great and proud. I've served our customers with delicious dumplings and I know they enjoy them very much, " said Chong Kinwo, creator of the Wanchai Ferry Brand.
During the Chinese New Year, with the tenth anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China quickly approaching, Chong Kin Wo is ready to promote Wanchai Ferry products in France, creating a new episode in her career. It seems that although she is now over 60, she still has dreams to pursue. Her desire is to see people all over the world enjoying her delicious dumplings and the warm wishes for an auspicious life that traditional Chinese food carries with it.
People in Hong Kong are familiar with these helicopters as they are often seen flying across Hong Kong to perform various rescue tasks.
