Although unable to walk normally, Li’s school records were outstanding and he always topped his school exams. Several years later, Li Chengyang and his younger brother both entered junior high school. In order to take care of him, his mother sent him to school by bike every day.

After his junior high school graduation, Li’s family bought him a pair of crutches for the first time. For three years in high school, he and his younger brother were also in the same class. With his strong resolve, he successfully obtained 565 points in the 2009 college entrance examinations, including the result of obtaining 138 points in English. He was hence enrolled into the English Language Department of Hubei University. His younger brother didn’t do so well in the examinations, getting 510 points, and was enrolled into Anhui University of Finance and Economics.

Li’s father is a substitute taxi driver, and when the principal taxi driver heard he wanted to send his son to go to university, on his own initiative he lent the car to Li’s father for a day.

At the enrollment ceremony, Li’s parents were watching after his luggage, and his younger brother was involved in the enrollment procedure. After all the formalities were completed, the whole family could finally relax. Looking at the two busy brothers, the father felt a little worried. “It will be a huge expense to support two kids studying at the same time at university. Fortunately, both the brothers understand this, and have both applied for educational loans.”

After finishing all the formalities, Li’s parents and younger brother went back home. Li stayed in his hostel, unpacking his bags. The bed was so high; could he get on to it? Li said with confidence, “No problem! I slept in such kind of bed when I was in high school.” In order to prove his words, he removed his shoes and socks and climbed on to demonstrate once.

Although the boy looks cheerful and optimistic, he worries about his future. “First, I need to firmly master all my university courses, and then possibly I’ll continue to study for a master’s degree. My dream is to be a translator in the future.”
