Character’s story: Mrs. Tang is a small, elegant Shanghai woman from a well-to-do family. After undergoing the tragic death of her daughter and the ordeal of her sister’s rape by Japanese soldiers, she gains a profound understanding of the war. At the end, she has the opportunity of leaving Nanjing with her husband, who however decides to stay. Knowing that he will definitely die by staying, Mrs. Tang, does not persuade him to go with her, since by then she understands the meaning of national cause.
Actress’ account: A small character but one that stands firm on matters of principle.
At the beginning of the film, the family’s story is not as well developed as it is later on. It would look like a family much more with a younger sister and children. The director is someone open to suggestions and he encouraged me to express my own opinions. This leads to the transformation of the Tang family after going through the ordeal of war. Mr. and Mrs. Tang, in fact, are insignificant. They are small characters with small mindsets--- selfish, self-protective, and seeking enjoyment. But on matters of principle, their actions are very touching. The angle of the film, “City of Life and Death,” shows an understanding of the war from the perspective of ordinary people.
Lu Chuan’s remarks: Qin Lan delivered an outstanding performance. Her acting along with that of Fan Wei’s has played pivotal roles in the film. It is not easy for a girl from Shenyang to portray a Shanghai woman. Given that Qin Lan has acted a lot of sweet and charming roles in the past, I believe that with her strong ability of comprehension and skills and talent, she can become a great actress.
