The Defense Ministry of China has held a grand reception in Beijing to mark the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army.

Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan presided over the reception and extended festive greetings to the PLA soldiers, armed police, reservists and paramilitary soldiers. The minister said the PLA are peace-loving, and are resolved to making a contribution to maintaining world peace and promoting development.

On the Taiwan issue, he stressed that the PLA is fully capable of safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity and would not allow anyone in any form to separate Taiwan from China.

On August 1, 1927, an uprising at Nanchang in eastern China's Jiangxi Province marked the beginning of the CPC's independent leadership of the armed forces. After the founding of the new China in 1949, the government marked August 1st as the national Army Day.
