Int'l Orchid Show Opens in Southwest China

The 12th Chengdu International Orchid Exposition opened on Wednesday in Pengcheng City of southwest China's Sichuan Province.

More than 6,000 pots of orchid are on display at the seven-day show, including 1,500 pots competing for awards.

Overseas delegations, including those from Japan, the Republic of Korea and the United States, attended the show.

Orchid cultivation in Pengcheng dated back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907). The total value of the city's orchid is estimated to exceed 400 million yuan (48.19 million U.S. dollars), and annual orchid sales can be as much as 50 million yuan.

Sponsors of the event are China Orchid Association, China Orchid Society, Forestry Department of Sichuan Province and municipal government of Chengdu.
