Chinese Proficiency Test Popular Worldwide

The HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi), also known as the Chinese Proficiency Test, has won increasing popularity worldwide.

Since the test was launched overseas 10 years ago, 380,000 students from more than 120 countries have participated in it, China Education Daily reported.

The overseas applicants for the test in 2001 increased by 47 percent compared with 2000.

HSK is a national standardized test designed to assess the Chinese language proficiency of non-native speakers, including foreigners, overseas Chinese and students from Chinese national minorities. HSK is divided into three categories, according to level of proficiency i.e. basic, intermediate and advanced levels.

In addition to the 44 examination sites in China, 55 examination sites have been set up in 24 countries in Asia, Europe, America and Oceania.

At a ceremony for the 10th anniversary of HSK Monday, Zhang Xinsheng, vice-minister of education, said exchange and cooperation in the field of language education between China and foreign countries will be strengthened in the future.
