Protection Area for Wild Animals, Plants in Central China

A protection project for wild animals and plants is to be launched in central China's Hunan Province to turn the province into a "paradise" for wild animals and plants in the next five to 10 years.

An official from the provincial forestry bureau said that they aim to enlarge or build 100 nature reserves by 2010. The project will also include protection of wetlands and will cover 1.3 million hectares.

A complete monitoring network for wild animals and the wetlands will be established on completion of the project.

Hunan province has made great efforts to protect its wild animals and plants. By the end of 2001, the province had set up 52 nature reserves and 44 forest parks.

The wide variety of species in the region has attracted worldwide attention, and over 100 experts from the United States and Finland have been to Hunan to investigate in the protection of wildlife.
