Bush Leaves China for Home

U.S. President George W. Bush concluded his two-day working visit to China and left Beijing for home Friday afternoon.

Leaving with him were his wife Laura Bush, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, Chief of Staff of White House Andrew Card and Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs Condoleezza Rice.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Yang Jiechi and U.S. Ambassador to China Clark Randt saw them off at the airport.

On Thursday morning, Chinese President Jiang Zemin held "positive, constructive and fruitful talks" with Bush. They exchanged views on Sino-U.S. relations and international and regional issues of major concern, and reached broad and important consensus. Jiang put forward four points on developing the bilateral relations between the two countries, which Bush agreed on. The two leaders met the press jointly after the talks.

At the invitation of Bush, Jiang will visit the United States this fall before he attends the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting in Mexico. Chinese Vice President Hu Jintao will visit the U.S. in the near future as the guest of U.S. Vice President Richard Bruce Cheney.

Jiang hosted a welcome banquet in Bush's honor Thursday evening.Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, and Li Ruihuan, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, attended the banquet.

Premier Zhu Rongji met with Bush Friday morning. The U.S. president then went to Qinghua University, where he, accompanied by Hu Jintao, delivered a speech.

Jiang and his wife Wang Yeping had luncheon with Bush and his wife Laura Bush Friday, and bid farewell to them.
