Traditionally, most Chinese women were not to be seen in active public life. Certainly not in trade or commerce.
Today, though, things have changed. Liu Miyun of Inner Mongolia took her successful business to Beijing in September 2002.
She started by selling stuffed camels, oxen, horses and sheep. It took her a while to realize that city folks were more fond of cats and dogs than creatures of the grassland.
Her business is so good today she is already planning for a big push next year – The Year of the Dog in the Chinese zodiac.
Women who succeed in business on either side of the Strait are almost impossible to list, but their range of operations cover every aspect of life, including handbags and gag toys.
Across the Strait, 23 July, CCTV-4, at 17:15 Beijing Time.
