Around China – Jiyuan
Jiyuan is located in the northwestern part of He’nan Province. It is a city most people know little about. However, this is the home of the Foolish Old Man in The Foolish Old Man Who Removed Mountains, one of the ancient Chinese fables, which was retold by Mao Tsetung in one of his works.
Naturally, Jiyuan sits amongst mountain ranges, with scenery that can match those found in southern China. One well-known Chinese painting, currently housed in a museum on Taiwan, generated controversy for generations of scholars and academics because the hills are clearly what one would find around Jiyuan and the painter was from Jiyuan. Yet, the trees you see on the painting are not what you would find in real life today.
Jiyuan is also the origin of the Jishui, a river that ranked with the other three major rivers in China in ancient times, namely The Yangtze, The Yellow River, and the Huaihe River. Therefore, Jiyuan is rich in cultural heritage as well.
