Tianjin-produced Crowns go on sale

The Crown sedan produced by a joint venture of Tianjin FAW Xiali Automobile and Toyota went on sale Monday.

Now what is significant is, this is the first model of this car produced outside Japan.

Monday also marked the completion of the venture's second plant in Tianjin. The Crown comes in seven varieties with prices ranging from 40,000 to 58,000 US dollars. The joint venture expects to sell 20,000 Crowns this year. Toyota is adding production facilities and introducing new models to increase its share of China's car market to 10 percent by 2010 from its current 3 percent. The company lags behind Volkswagen, the market leader with 25 percent, and General Motors with just over 9 percent.
