   FRI, OCT 25, 2002

Russian President Vladimir Putin has canceled his trip to Mexico to attend the 10th annual meeting of leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum scheduled for October 26-27 due to the hostage-taking crisis in Moscow, presidential press secretary Alexei Gromov said Thursday.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov will attend the summit instead of Putin, his spokesman said, quoted by the Interfax news agency.

The Kremlin earlier announced that Putin had canceled two stop-over visits he had scheduled for Germany and Portugal on his way to the Mexico APEC summit.

Some 700 people were taken hostage in a Moscow theater late Wednesday by Chechen separatist guerrillas who are demanding Russian troops withdraw from Chechnya.
