Mexican President calls for faster economic development
   WED, OCT 23, 2002

Mexican President Vicente Fox said in Los Cabos on Tuesday that the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies "are on the right path, but it is a must to accelerate the process."

He delivered the speech at the Mexican tourist resort of Los Cabos, where senior officials from the APEC forum are meeting to finalize the agenda of the 10th informal meeting of the APEC leaders scheduled for October 26-27.

He said members are partners in a drive for free trade, and: "We're in search for a firm economic growth within a framework of peace and security."

Nonetheless, he said that in a globalized world, the well-being inside each economy influenced the rest. Thus, "we all share the responsibility of assuring economic growth and development for a common benefit."

The Mexican president added that Mexico seeks to become a bridge to coordinate growth and development efforts among Pacific Rim economies.

For this reason, Fox said the country welcomes the 21 member economies and invites them to exchange ideas and experiences in a free way in order to reach sustained growth, distribute income, fight poverty and seek sustained development.

Mexico's head of state is set to return to Los Cabos on Thursday to inaugurate the meeting of entrepreneurial leaders, and on October 26-27, he will host the APEC Summit.
