In China's biggest city, Shanghai, fireworks lit up the skies as a prelude to the International Music and Fireworks Festival. Artists from American and European troupes are displaying their exotic appeal in Shanghai Century Park to the applause of local audiences.

In the southern city of Guangzhou, more than 100,000 potted flowers filled city streets to send a message of people's festive mood. Four squares have been decorated with flowers to celebrate the holiday together with the city's citizens.

In the northwestern city of Yinchuan, ethnic minority people expressed their best wishes to the motherland with various singing and dancing performances. The beating of drums and the lion dance boosted the festive atmosphere to a new high.

The northeastern city of Changchun welcomed large numbers of people with a kite-flying performance. Kites of different shapes flew higher and higher accompanied by people's cheers and awe. Five huge dragon-shaped kites, each measuring more than 80 meters, symbolized the country's ever more prosperous future.

The weeklong vacation also marked the arrival of huge crowds of visitors. The world-renowned terra cotta warriors in Shaanxi province have been fully prepared for the vacation.
