A reception has been held at the Great Hall of the People. The celebration is to mark the 53rd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Chinese President Jiang Zemin, top legislator Li Peng and Premier Zhu Rongji were all there for the event.
China's CPC and State leaders, including President Jiang Zemin as well as Li Peng, Zhu Rongji, Li Ruihuan, Hu Jintao, Wei Jianxing and Li Lanqing, along with more than 1,000 representatives of various walks of life and foreign guests attended the reception hosted by the State Council. Premier Zhu Rongji conveyed holiday greetings to those present at the gathering and briefed them on the country's development over the past 53 years.
The premier said that since the People's Republic of China was founded 53 years ago, the Chinese people of all ethnic groups, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, have worked as one and achieved splendid successes.
He added that overseas Chinese and compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan have expressed and extended their constant support and assistance to China's reform and modernization drive.
Zhu Rongji noted that the national economy has sustained favorable growth this year -- with the GDP rising steadily and foreign trade maintaining strong growth momentum.
The premier also said that China has seen vigorous progress in the implementation of its strategy to revitalize the nation through science and education as well as in its sustainable development program.
He remarked that the 16th CPC National Congress scheduled for November will be the first of its kind in the new century, and will lead the Chinese people toward more steadfast strides into the future.
Zhu Rongji reaffirmed that the Central Government will give its utmost support to both the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions in implementing basic law. He also noted that it's the common aspiration of all Chinese people to resolve the Taiwan issue as soon as possible.
The premier said that China will continue to implement the policy of "peaceful reunification" and "One country, Two systems" for the early reunification of the motherland.
As for foreign policy, Premier Zhu Rongji said that China would continue developing its relations with nations around the world. He stressed that China stands against any kind of terrorism. Zhu Rongji added that China, along with other nations, has been striving to establish a new global political and economic order.
