Big show staged to say "Happy Birthday" to China
Shanghai's Hongkou Stadium featured a rock of nation over the weekend, as a large-scale song and dance gala hit the stage on the evening of Sept.28. "Ode to China", follows the revolutionary footsteps of China and eulogized the great yields it has made in scientific, economic and cultural development since the new China was founded in 1949.
The curtains opened to the piano concerto -- The Yellow River. The symphonic melodies, accompanied by numerous dancers, unfolded the magnificent tapestry of the Chinese revolution.
Celebrated Chinese singers sang their hearts out on the stage. They belted out songs which looked both into the past, back upon China's glorious history, and forward into the country's future prospects.
Emotions were inflamed when pop singer Sun Nan presented one of his masterpieces, "Flying, the Red Flag". The song brought the whole crowd to their feet while volunteers passed a huge national flag above their heads.
The high spirits were further stirred when the spotlight focused on Mao Zedong riding a horse to the stage and Deng Xiaoping waving from a car. Was it an illusion? Were the country's late leaders really coming back out of legend? No! They were just look-a-likes.
The show was presented as a special birthday gift to the nation of China ahead of the special day on Oct.1.
