Beijing, Nanjing ablaze with holiday lanterns
   MON, SEP 30, 2002

As the whole country stands on tiptoes for National Day, in some cities, it's now difficult to tell the difference between night and day. Beijing and Nanjing for instance have illuminated their streets with hundreds of festive lanterns and lights.

In the capital, the flowery terraces on Tian'anmen Square are lit up with a stereoscopic lighting system. Over 20,000 lights present brilliant visual effects. Chang'an avenue has turned into a glittering ocean with red, orange and yellow lights shining onto 100 buildings along the street. Additional lighting inside the houses gives them unusual splendor. The largest buildings along the city's main axis will be illuminated until October 7.

Nanjing is a city that boasts a fantastic display of lanterns. This year's theme is "New Life, New Image, New Development." The visual feast aims to demonstrate the city's fast development, combining modern technology with China's traditional lanterns.
