Study about Dunhuang  |

 During this century, the treasures of Dunhuang have generated broad ranging research efforts among Chinese and foreign scholars, resulting in what is now referring to as Dunhuang Studies. Their research has been fruitful and has increased for and of the brilliance of Chinese civilization.
The International Dunhuang Project (IDP) was established in 1993 to promote the study and preservation of manuscripts and printed documents from Dunhuang and other Central Asian sites through international co-operation.
The Dunhuang Academy, which was established in 1944, has been active in publications, educating the wide public with books, pamphlets, slides, and picture postcards and also in research by organizing academic symposiums and workshops. From 1949 to date, the academy sent many exhibitions to the major cities of China and abroad.
Besides copying the wall paintings, the academy has taken up serious researches on the periodization and identification of the paintings and sculptures in the Mogao Caves. Foreign researchers are invited by the academy to conduct on-site investigation and discussion with Chinese researchers.
In February 1996, an international symposium on conservation was held in Nara, Japan. Researchers from Japan, China and other countries who are studying conservation of mural paintings were participated in the symposium.
An international symposium with more than 200 scholars from 16 countries and regions has been held in Dunhuang from July 29 to August 3, 2000, sponsored by the Dunhuang Academy. Research papers presented during the symposia covered a wide range of issues concerning the Dunhuang Grottoes, from art to history, geography, religion, archaeology, language and words. They have provided a rich and valuable treasury for the study of Dunhuang.
