Geography of Dunhuang
   MON, JUL 22, 2002

Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, also called Mogao Caves or the Caves of A Thousand Buddhas, lie in the western end of Hexi Corridor in Gansu Province, northwest of China. They are bordered by Subei Mongolian County and Ahsai Kazakh Autonomous County to the south, Anxi County to the northeast and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to the northwest.

Surrounded by the vast expanse of Gobi desert and rolling high mountains, the grottoes are set into a cliff wall of Echoing-sand Mountain about 25km southeast of the oasis city. Totally the area is about 31,200 square kilometers, of which the oasis area covers 4.5 percent. The average elevation is about 1,100 meters and mean temperature of 9.3 Celsius.

Due to the dry weather here, most of the relics of Dunhuang maintain reserved well and we can still clearly see some of the murals, paintings and documents today.
