CPPCC members urge government departments to get wise to the web
   FRI, MAR 08, 2002

CPPCC members have urged the government departments to make better use of the Internet to improve the efficiency and transparency of their work.

At this morning's third plenary session of the top Chinese government advisory body, CPPCC member Xie Lijuan urged government departments to provide more public services on the Internet. She says posting public affairs on the net would make it easier to access and supervise government departments. Currently more than twenty-two hundred government departments throughout the country have put the result of their work on the Internet. Some provide financial transactions and tax audit services, long distance education programs as well as employment information.

Xie Lijuan also pointed out areas to be improved in order to push forward the government's Internet services. She suggests, for example, that websites and the contents of their services should be standardized.
