Senior Chinese officials join group discussions

During Wednesday's group discussions, Shanghai NPC deputies made speeches, which covered the opportunities and challenges facing China after WTO accession, social welfare problems, and how to help the disadvantaged, including the poverty-stricken rural population, laid-off workers, and the disabled.

After their speeches, Jiang Zemin first acknowledged the achievements Shanghai had made in the past year with the support of the whole nation. He noted Shanghai should play a central, cosmopolitan role and use its human and technological advantages in promoting national overall economic performance, and in realizing the country's modernization.

NPC Chairman Li Peng met with NPC deputies from Beijing. He mentioned community development, which, he said, plays a crucial role in social stability and in the improvement of people's daily lives.

Premier Zhu Rongji held discussions with deputies from Hunan and Shanxi provinces, with agriculture the main topic. Zhu Rongji said this year, more efforts should be put in the adjustment of agriculture, and helping farmers increase their income. The premier stated bureaucracy and formalism are not what the people and government want.

CPPCC Chairman Li Ruihuan and deputies from Tianjin focused their discussion on how to help the disadvantaged.
