Press briefed on upcoming CPPCC meeting

The 5th session of the 9th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, or CPPCC, will begin on Sunday in Beijing. Members of the CPPCC will present and deliberate on a series of proposals concerning the country's economic and social development. Saturday afternoon, the press was briefed on the ten and a half day session.

Spokesman Qi Huaiyuan briefed domestic and foreign journalists on the main items on the agenda. It is the last session of the Ninth CPPCC National Committee.

The items include a report on the work of the Standing Committee of the 9th CPPCC National Committee, a report on the handling of proposals since last year's session, and a report on government work to be given by Premier Zhu Rongji at the upcoming National People's Congress session.

The session will end on March 13th with a speech from CPPCC chairman Li Ruihuan.

In response to questions from the press, Qi Huaiyuan said CPPCC members have put forward many constructive suggestions for the implementation of the tenth Five-Year Plan.

Qi Huaiyuan, CPPCC spokesman said, "Last year was the first year for the implementation of the tenth Five-Year Plan. The CPPCC has given priority to the smooth implementation of the Plan. The CPPCC has chosen a dozen forward-looking topics bearing on China's reform and development and organized two dozen fact-finding missions to places around the country and put forward many constructive suggestions that are of great value to the government decision-making bodies."

According to the spokesman, a total of 172 proposals have been submitted so far. 2,267 CPPCC members will attend the session.

Two press conferences will be held over the course of the session, one on promoting agricultural development and increasing farmers' income and the other on the market economy and social credit.

The CPPCC is a patriotic united organization of the Chinese people, a key instrument of multi-party cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the Communist Party of China.

It is a major channel for promoting socialist democracy.
