   THU, FEB 28, 2002

The Fifth Session of the Ninth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), due to open on March 3, will be of significance after China's recent accession into the World Trade Organization (WTO), Li Ruihuan, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, said in Beijing Thursday.

He made the statement at the close of the 16th meeting of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC National Committee, which was convened on February 26-28.

The Standing Committee suggested that the annual session hear and examine the work report by the Standing Committee of the Ninth CPPCC National Committee, and a report on handling of proposals since last year's CPPCC annual session.

The CPPCC has fully played a consultative role in the country's decision-making process since the Fourth Session of the Ninth National Committee of the CPPCC, said Zheng Wantong, secretary-general of the CPPCC National Committee.

During the fifth session, the CPPCC National Committee members will also attend the Fifth Session of the Ninth National People's Congress (NPC), as non-voting participants.
