CPPCC Opposes Separatist Acts of Any Description
   SUN, MAR 03, 2002

The Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top advisory body, firmly adheres to the One-China Principle and resolutely opposes separatist acts of any description by people attempting to make Taiwan independent, and opposes the interference in and obstruction of the peaceful reunification of China by any outside forces, said Ye Xuanping, vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee.

He made the statement in his work report to the Fifth Session of the Ninth CPPCC National Committee that opened here Sunday afternoon.

The CPPCC will work hard to remove any obstacles to the development of the cross-Straits relations so as to make new contributions to the complete reunification of the motherland, Ye said.

Over the past year, Ye said, the CPPCC National Committee earnestly implemented the policies of "peaceful reunification; one country, two systems", intensified activities for unity and friendship with people in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan as well as overseas Chinese, made more extensive contacts with all patriots upholding socialism and reunification of the motherland and performed its due obligations of assisting in and promoting the implementation of relevant State policies.

The CPPCC sponsored a series of activities to mark the 90th anniversary of the 1911 Revolution. The various parties and the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce held activities to commemorate the brilliant achievements and lofty spirit of the revolutionary forerunners. In cooperation with relevant departments, the CPPCC hosted a forum to mark the seventh anniversary of the publication of President Jiang Zemin's eight-point proposition on Taiwan issue and organized other activities to promote economic, cultural and personnel exchanges between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits. It also increased exchanges with parties, organizations and people from all walks of life in Taiwan who uphold reunification of the motherland, said Ye.

In addition, the CPPCC organized delegations to participate in activities for China's peaceful reunification sponsored by overseas Chinese.

Ye pledged that the CPPCC will, in accordance with the basic principles of "peaceful reunification; one country, two systems", continue to carry out both in words and spirit Jiang Zemin's eight-point proposition on the cross-Straits relations and for the peaceful reunification of the motherland, unite with compatriots of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and overseas Chinese in concerted efforts for the reunification of the motherland and for economic cooperation and exchanges between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits.

The CPPCC will try all possible ways to keep Taiwan compatriots and overseas Chinese updated with what the motherland has achieved in reform and opening up and hear their views on how to make the cross-Straits ties closer and how to promote exchange and mutual understanding of two sides of the Taiwan Straits.
